More about Yala National Park
Intro
What you actually pay comes in two parts, and this is where most published prices mislead. The jeep is hired per vehicle. The park fees are charged per person on top. On the only fee gazette anyone cites — 2292/11, effective 01/09/22 — a foreign adult is $25, a child aged 6–12 is $15, under-6s are free, there is a $10 service charge per jeep and a vehicle charge of LKR 300, and 18% VAT has applied since 01/01/24.[1] For two adults in one jeep that is roughly $61 before VAT and about $72–73 after — call it $36 per person on top of whatever the jeep costs. Two operator worked examples land in the same place ($71.98 and about $71).[2] Sources disagree in the margins: one gives the service charge as $8 and the vehicle charge as LKR 500, and several operator sites still quote the old 15% VAT. Forum claims of a "$40 from 01/01/26" fee are unsourced and are not published here.
Gates run roughly 06:00–18:00, shifting by about half an hour through the year. A morning drive is 06:00–10:00, an afternoon drive 14:00–18:00, and a full day runs the whole 06:00–18:00.[3]
The park runs to roughly 979 km² across five blocks, plus the department's own Zone VI. Most safaris go into Block 1 through the main Palatupana gate or through Katagamuwa. Block 5 routes are recorded via Galge. For Block 6 (Lunugamwehera), DWC names Kalupalama and Galge for bungalow permits, not guaranteed safari access. Confirm your gate and route; Block 4 access and cross-block permissions are not established here. Block 2 needs a special permit and Block 3 is not open.[3:1] A deputy minister has proposed opening Blocks III–VI, capping jeep numbers at around 250–300 and fitting GPS units, but no gazette or implementation has been published — it is a proposal, not policy.[4]
Booking works locally and informally: you message an operator, agree a drive, and pay after. The official permit route is the DWC e-permit portal, which issues a QR permit for roughly a 3% fee and requires a printout.[5] Worth knowing before you search: every website calling itself "Official Yala" is a private business — yalasrilanka.lk, yalanationalparks.com, yalalk.com, yalawildlife.com and safaribookingyala.com are all commercial booking brands, not the Department of Wildlife Conservation.[6]
Yala is Sri Lanka's busiest national park and its highest-earning one: 646,704 visitors in 2024, of whom 353,646 were foreign, producing LKR 3.86bn in revenue — more than Udawalawe (276,081), Minneriya (154,483) and Wilpattu (130,119) combined on the money line.[7]
Seasons and prices
The cited best window is the dry season, roughly February to July. Rain falls mainly October to January.
The cited 2026 notice covers Blocks 1 and 2, 14 September to 15 October, for drought.[8] It does not establish access elsewhere. Confirm your booked gate and current route.
The history is worth keeping, because it is why we go by the year's notice rather than by the pattern. Block 1 traditionally closes from 1 September to mid-October for drought, but on-the-ground reports say it did not close in September–October 2025.[9] The 2025 closure that did happen was Cyclone Ditwah, 28 November to 8 December.[10] So the tradition does not tell you whether Yala is shut in September, and this year's notice does. Check the season-status line at the top, which is updated from the dataset.
Jeep hire, as a market range to sanity-check any quote against — not an operator price: half-day roughly $40–55 (LKR 12,000–17,500) per jeep, full-day roughly $60–85 (LKR 28,000–41,000) per jeep, park fees excluded in both cases.[11]
A note on arithmetic that decides most bookings: because the jeep is priced per vehicle and the fees per head, a group of four to six is far better off on a private jeep than on per-person shared seats. A "from $15" shared seat and a $40–85 private jeep are not the same product, and this site never compares them as though they were.
Responsible safari
A leopard jam is what happens when a sighting is radioed round and jeeps converge on it. Roughly 500 jeeps are admitted across the morning and afternoon sessions — the source is ambiguous about whether that figure is per session — against a historic peak of more than 1,000 vehicles a day. Block 5 sees around 20 jeeps a session.[12]
On leopards, the number to use is a floor rather than a headcount. In Block 1, researchers photographed and individually identified 77 leopards as at 31/03/21, which over the block's 141 km² is 0.5461 leopards per km² — up from 0.217 per km² in 2017. The same study identified 137 individual leopards in Block 1 between 2013 and 2021, across 750 days of field observation.[13] Two things that number is not: it is not park-wide, because Block 1 is 141 km² of a 979 km² park, and it is not an estimate of how many leopards are there. It counts only the animals someone could name on sight, so the real figure is higher by an unknown amount.
The documented incidents: a leopard hit-and-run in 2011; a two-jeep collision in 2021; an elephant toppling a jeep on the Katagamuwa road in March 2025; and in April 2026 the case of "Lucas", an alleged jeep strike, after which the DWC director general ordered an investigation and the warden suspended the jeep, while the jeep owners' association denied knowledge. Lucas was later reported healthy. The outcome of the investigation has not been published.[14]
Licensing is two separate things and neither has a public register. The DWC registers the jeep for park entry and, since 01/01/24, issues the driver a training ID jointly with SLTDA. SLTDA separately registers the business under "Vehicle Safari Tour Operations". Its guideline sets a 30 km/h maximum, demarcated routes, a tracker or a licensed driver, and up to nine passengers. There were 552 DWC-registered jeeps at Yala according to the jeep owners' association president.[15] Because no register is public, this site only ever marks a licence verified when someone has seen the ID or the sticker in person and recorded where.
What to ask a driver before you book: which block and which gate; whether the price is per jeep or per person; whether park fees are in or out; and what they do when a leopard is already surrounded.
FAQ
How much is a Yala safari? The jeep and the park fees are separate. Expect roughly $40–55 for a half-day jeep and $60–85 for a full day,[11:1] plus about $36 per person in park fees and VAT.[1:1] Any single "per person" price that sounds cheaper is usually a shared seat or excludes the fees.
What are the Yala National Park entry fees for foreigners? $25 per adult, $15 per child aged 6–12, free under 6, a $10 service charge per jeep and LKR 300 per vehicle, all plus 18% VAT since 01/01/24, under gazette 2292/11.[1:2] Those adult and child figures are the tourist-season rate. Outside the tourist season the same gazette sets a lower rate, $20 per adult and $10 per child.[1:3] Some operator sites still show 15% VAT — that is out of date.
When is the best time for a Yala safari? February to July is the dry window most sources point to. October to January is the wet period.
Is Yala closed in September? Part of it is, in 2026. Blocks 1 and 2 close from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought, announced by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on 26/08/26.[8:1] That takes out Block 1, which is where nearly every safari goes. It is not an every-year certainty: the traditional 1 September to mid-October closure did not happen in 2025,[9:1] so go by the notice for the year you are travelling, not by the tradition. The 2025 closure that did happen was Cyclone Ditwah in late November.[10:1]
Block 1 or Block 5? Block 1 is the main, busiest block through Palatupana. Block 5 is quieter — around 20 jeeps a session — and is reached from the Buttala side through Galge.[3:2][12:1]
Half-day or full-day? A half-day is a single 06:00–10:00 or 14:00–18:00 drive. A full day runs 06:00–18:00. Because park fees are charged per person per entry rather than per hour, a full day spreads the same fee over more time in the park.
Can I do a Yala safari from Ella, Tissamaharama or Mirissa? Operators based in Tissamaharama and Kataragama are closest to the gates. Transfers are sold from Ella, Mirissa and Galle, but those are bundles that include a long road journey, not gate-to-gate jeep hire — check which you are buying.
Do I book through an official website? The only official channel is the DWC e-permit portal.[5:1] Every site branded "Official Yala" is a private company.[6:1]

How to read these cards
We show what each operator publishes, and where we found it. A blank means we have not found that fact yet. It does not mean the answer is no.
Verified means the licence or ID has been checked against a named source. Claimed means the operator states a number that has not been independently checked. Neither on a card means no evidence either way, and that is not the same as an operator with no licence.
A rating is only as good as where it came from, so the source is printed beside it. Two sites count two different sets of reviews, and we never add them together.
A published price is what the operator advertises, not a quote for your trip. Beside it we print what they say it covers and, where we know it, the day we recorded it. Two prices on different bases are not the same product, and this site does not treat them as one.
