How to compare safari quotes

Check whether a safari price is per person or per jeep, what it includes, how long the trip lasts and what happens if plans change.

Published 04/10/26

Choose your park first, then ask operators for the same trip on the same date. Compare a Yala quote with another Yala quote, rather than a trip to a different park. Within that park, confirm the entrance and area the trip covers too.

A lower headline price is only useful once you know what it buys. Ask for the full amount for everyone travelling, with any separate charges listed alongside it.

Ask for these details in writing

Send your date, group size, children's ages and accommodation with these questions:

  • Which trip are we comparing? Please confirm the park, entrance, block or area, and planned route. Will you ask us before changing any of these?
  • What does the price cover? Is it per person or per jeep? Is the jeep private to our group or shared with other passengers? Does the total cover everyone coming, and how many passengers will travel in our jeep?
  • Are all compulsory charges included? Please separate jeep hire from park entry, vehicle entry, service charges, taxes and any guide or tracker charge. Which are included, which are extra, and who do we pay for each?
  • What else is included? Does the quote cover fuel, food, drinks and any equipment we need? Are there other charges we would have to pay?
  • How long is the trip? Please confirm pickup, park entry, park exit and return times. How much of the quoted duration is inside the park? Does pickup cover our accommodation and the return journey, and does it cost extra?
  • What if plans change? What is the cancellation deadline, how do we cancel and what would be refunded? What happens if weather or park access changes the trip, you cancel it or it ends early? Would we get a refund, another date or a different trip?

Keep the reply with your booking confirmation. If a term is missing, ask before paying.

Private does not mean priced per jeep

A private jeep means your group has the vehicle to itself. It does not tell you how the price is calculated. Yala Ethical Safari describes its packages as private but prices them per person. Yala Leopard Safari by Hirun's full-day page quotes per jeep.[1][2]

For a price per person, ask for the total for your actual group. For a price per jeep, confirm who that quote covers and whether your group needs more than one vehicle. For a shared trip, ask how many other passengers may join. Compare the confirmed group totals once the trip details match.

Separate park fees from the safari service

Hirun's full-day page includes the jeep, fuel, guide, pickup in named local areas and lunch, but excludes park entrance and service fees.[2:1] YalaSafari.srilanka says park entry is included in its displayed tour prices.[3] These are examples of the operators' published terms when checked, not inclusions you can assume for every safari.

Ask for any separate park charges for your group and date, including taxes and service charges, before comparing the final cost. Confirm who arranges the entry permit and who keeps the receipt. The Department of Wildlife Conservation's online permit instructions ask for the park, date, group details including drivers and guides, and vehicle details; they also tell visitors to retain the payment receipt for entry.[4]

A permit process does not establish today's tariff or what an operator has included. This guide does not quote park fees.

Confirm pickup and cancellation separately

Give the operator your accommodation address. Pickup in a named town or area does not establish that your hotel is covered. Ask about collection, return transport and any extra charge.

YalaSafari.srilanka says it will discuss options if weather or park conditions affect a tour. Its booking information makes cancellation and eligible refunds depend on the booking arrangements and applicable costs.[3:1] That does not give you a fixed refund entitlement for your own trip. Ask for the deadline, refundable amount and treatment of already paid park charges in writing. Ask about your cancellation and the operator's cancellation separately.

Use recorded prices as a starting point

Start with the listings for your chosen park: Yala, Udawalawe, Wilpattu, Minneriya or Kumana. Use the recorded price and its stated basis to decide what to ask. It is not a final offer for your group and date.

A blank means we have not recorded that information. It does not mean a charge is free, a service is absent or there is no cancellation policy. An operator's reply is their statement; this guide does not establish their licence status.

Once the park, group, duration and inclusions match, compare the full costs alongside pickup and cancellation terms. You can then see what each quote actually buys.
